Bonsai Theory of Church Growth revised, expanded for 20th anniversary - Jun 7, 2011
For two decades, Ken Hemphill’s book Bonsai Theory of Church Growth has helped church leaders identify the artificial barriers that stunt the natural, proportionate growth of healthy congregations.
Now, on the 20th anniversary of the book’s first printing, Auxano Press has completely revised and expanded Bonsai Theory of Church Growth for a new generation of church leaders as well as those who want a refresher on the insights revealed in it.
“My experience in working with churches of various sizes and styles is that the principles described in this book have helped many of them eliminate those artificial barriers of healthy church growth and then devise strategies to get them on the road to vibrancy and growth,” says Kenneth Priest, project manager at Auxano Press, who worked with Hemphill on the revised and expanded edition.
“This newest edition has an updated look and feel. Also, Auxano Press has developed materials for small group studies of Bonsai Theory, downloadable free of charge at www.auxanopress.com,” Priest added.
As Hemphill, former pastor, seminary president and denominational executive, explains in the book, the secret to growing a miniature tree—a Bonsai—is providing cumbersome care to ensure it grows in ways that keep it small. Unfortunately, many churches have the ornamental beauty of the Bonsai tree—with its corresponding smallness. But it need not be this way, Hemphill says. Following a natural and supernatural trajectory, a church can break through these artificial barriers to become all God intends for it with the end game of furthering God’s kingdom for time and for eternity.
